Team Canada cruised its way to victory in a 3-0 win over Sweden in today’s gold medal game in Sochi.
Canada’s goal-starved forwards Johnathan Toews and Sidney Crosby each picked up a goal in the first two periods of the game. Chris Kunitz scored the third and final goal halfway through the third period, sealing their victory. Team Canada’s impenetrable defense shut down the Swedish team’s offense and goaltender Carey Price made 24 saves in the shutout. With this win, the Canadians finished their championship run at 6-0-0, marking the first time since the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games that a team has marched through a tournament without a single loss.
This win comes shortly after the Canadian Women’s Hockey team won their gold medals after beating the U.S.A. 3-2 on February 20. It certainly wasn’t an easy ride for both the Men and Women’s hockey teams but they’ve re-established Canada as a Hockey superpower. Congratulations to both the Men and Women’s hockey team on winning the gold!
