Mother’s Day is a bit of a weird holiday because it’s one you know you need to buy a gift for, but it doesn’t exactly feel like it’s at the same level as a birthday. If your family is anything like mine, you may not even be sure if your mom actually celebrates a mothers day at all, which is probably adding to your problem of being stuck between having no ideas for what you should get mom this year, and trying to avoid repeating last year’s festivities. Worry not, last minute shoppers, below you’ll find a few ways to transform your standard gift into something more thoughtful and appreciated without having to spend a ton of money and with minimal planning.

The key to a successful Mother’s Day (read: any holiday where you’re mom is involved) is time. It may surprise you to hear this, but your parents actually like spending time with you. The older you get, the more you evolve into a decent human being. The way you are right now could just be the first time your parents have been able to see some of your good qualities since before you hit that sassy, teen angst stage in high school. Let mom soak that up this year by spending a real amount of time with her, because nothing says, “ Thanks for everything. I really appreciate that you’ve done so much for me, including a lot of really gross stuff I’d prefer not to mention” like dedicating a day to the woman who birthed/raised you.

Women like flowers. Even women who think they don’t care about flowers enjoy a few stems every now and again. If you were thinking of buying you’re mom some fresh cut flowers, you’re on the right track, but your dad probably has that covered. If you want to earn some extra points, take your mom to a nursery and let her pick out some flowers for the yard. She can plant them in the garden, but, if your mom isn’t exactly the gardening type, hanging baskets and potted plants are what you’re looking for. They last longer than the cut flowers you’ll find at the grocery store, they make your house look nice, and your mom will know you were thinking about her. Bonus points to the son and/or daughter who helps with the gardening.

On the other end of the spectrum, you may have been thinking about getting your mom a gift certificate for the spa because everyone loves a gift certificate, right? Not necessarily. I would say a spa gift certificate is a step or three above a normal gift certificate. A normal gift certificate generally says, “I didn’t know what to get you, and I didn’t want to/ didn’t have the time to think about it.” A spa gift certificate says, “Treat yo’self!” But just because that’s what your friends are getting their moms, doesn’t mean that’s what you should be getting yours. The first question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you’ve ever seen your mom get her nails done by herself, let alone make an appointment for a solo facial. If the answer is no, odds are she will appreciate the gift, but will probably never use it. Your best bet is to schedule an appointment for the both of you! You get to give your mom and yourself a gift at the same time. For the dudes feeling skeptical at this point, I want to remind you that there are plenty of options for you too, but if you just aren’t into it, schedule a manicure for you mom, and sit with her. It takes less than an hour. You can help her choose a colour and just hangout together.

This last idea is without a doubt the cheapest, but I can say with confidence, that this would be my mom’s favourite, and if we lived in the same city, this would absolutely be involved in my Mother’s Day plans: movie night

Your mom would probably watch the Blade Trilogy with you if you suggested it because that’s just how much she likes you, but since this is her day, I think you can go that extra mile and opt for a movie she’d appreciate. You can choose to go to the movies, but this Mother’s Day idea is actually just as successful if you plan something at home. Buy some DVDs, might I suggest something with Julia Roberts or Patrick Swayze, or round up a few of your mom’s favourites that she has at home, and let her choose. The point isn’t to torture yourself with chick flicks, but to actually enjoy spending time with your mom who’s a pretty badass woman for putting up with you for all these years.

With the amount of time your mom has dedicated to taking care of you, thinking about you, and worrying about your general well being, it’s not much of a burden to give one Sunday a year to remind her, in case you haven’t recently, that you love and appreciate her. Honestly, we never really grow out of that macaroni art stage because she’ll like any gift you give her, but she’ll like spending time with you more. Again, it’s not about money or planning, it’s about taking the time out of your busy schedule to let your mom know she’s just as, if not more, important than anything else you have going on in your life. These are just a few ideas, but get creative. Think about what your mom likes, then think about how you can turn it into an activity with her, and I promise many brownie points await you.
