On April 28, Beyoncé quietly announced her and hubby Jay-Z’s upcoming On the Run tour by posting the tour poster of the two ski masked superstars to her website. In the short time since the announcement the line has been drawn between fans and critics.
Having just finished his Legends of Summer tour last year with Justin Timberlake and his own Magna Carter World tour that just ended in January, Jay-Z has been a busy boy, and Queen Bey has been no different. Beyoncé has been touring the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour since last April and only completed the final 132nd stop in March.
In reality, the partnership is not surprising. After six years of marriage, it was only a matter of time before the power couple took to the stage for a full co-headlining tour, but critics are already hurling insults labelling the two as greedy, and are drawing comparisons to Kim K and Kanye. It’s not just that the two have not taken a break since their last tours, and have chosen instead to do back to back (to back, in Jay-Z’s case) tours, but according to Forbes, with tickets averaging $342.67 on the secondary market, tickets for Jay-Z & Beyoncé: On the Run are actually 90% higher than prices for Jay-Z’s solo Magna Carta tour and 17% higher than tickets for Beyoncé’s Mrs. Carter Show.
Greedy or not, Jay-Z and Beyoncé are entertainers, and putting on shows is what we as fans demand from them and any other performer. Beyoncé’s decision to release her secret, self-titled album only a few short months before the Mrs. Carter Show tour ended was a pretty good sign that this was only the beginning, and pretending we didn’t know that another tour was coming just seems a little naïve.
Jayoncé fans are serious about their love of the power couple, so we know there will be no complaints there, but to the rest of the world, before you become a level 10 Mega Hater, consider this: Bey and Jay have been in the public eye for years, and are where they are because they’ve continued to produce likeable material over and over again, whether you dig it or not. Say what you will about Beyoncé’s new style, or Jay-Z’s fake retirement; these two are clearly doing something right.
Below is a list of the 16 stops Beyoncé and Jay-Z will be running to this summer. The price may be a bit steep, but at least we have the visual part of the Beyoncé album to keep us company.
