Like many children of the ‘90s, my childhood was defined by Britney Spears. She captivated her audiences with her dazzling dance moves and mind-numbingly catchy songs. Much like her idol Madonna, Britney has continually reinvented herself through her image and has made some of the most iconic music videos of all time. With the release of her latest video for her hot new single “Work Bitch,” Britney shows no signs of slowing down. Currently the second most expensive video ever made, “Work Bitch” is a fierce display of Britney’s ability to stay relevant. To celebrate her new video, I’ve decided to countdown her five greatest videos. Say what you will about Miss Spears, this girl knows how to work!

5. “Womanizer”

In 2008, Britney Spears became the comeback queen when she released “Womanizer.” After her very public meltdown, this song ended up being vindication for Britney as it topped the charts in over ten countries around the world. The video for the single features Britney in an array of get-ups as she follows around her good-for-nothing boyfriend throughout his day. Britney is playful and coy, indulging in some light-hearted humour (like photocopying her much-publicized crotch). It’s also notable for showing off Britney’s smokin’ hot post-breakdown body. Oh, and there’s some man candy too.

4. “I’m a Slave 4 U”

Following up her now-iconic snake charming routine at the VMAs, Britney released her raunchiest video to date for “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Britney pants and sweats her way through the video with an orgiastic dance party surrounding her. The choreography is top-notch and Britney’s panties-over-pants outfit became yet another iconic look for the Princess of Pop.

3. “Oops!… I Did It Again”

With a Bardot-inspired hairdo and a painted-on crimson catsuit, Britney vamped it up in her video for her hit single “Oops!… I Did It Again.” Set on the planet Mars, the video also features elaborate sets and intricate choreography. The song and its video marked Britney’s transition towards a more mature image while still catering to her then-pre-teen audience.

2. “Toxic”

As Britney’s most critically-acclaimed single, “Toxic” topped the charts in several countries and was a #1 hit in Canada. It redefined the genre of dance music and its accompanying video is one of Spears’ fiercest to date. The video plays out like an episode of Alias – Britney dons various disguises in her mission to assassinate her dashing nemesis. The exotic locales and colourful costumes make this video a must-see. Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention her diamond-studded nude bodysuit. Who could forget that?!

1. “… Baby One More Time”

“… Baby One More Time” is the mother of all Britney videos. With this video, Britney announced her presence as a trendsetter and became an instant superstar. Her schoolgirl ensemble created a furor with its Lolita-esque appeal. To this day, fans show up to her concerts wearing the uniform and pigtails, further emphasizing the sheer power this video had. It’s also worth noting that this song and its video sent record executives everywhere scrambling to find their own version of Britney (re: Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, etc.). For its influential status and everyone’s failure to recreate the magic of Britney Spears, this video deserves the #1 spot.
