Film is the ultimate escape from reality. For an hour and a half (sometimes more), you’re able to check out of your life and experience another world. Movies inspire me creatively and have become such a huge part of my life. My tastes vary greatly too. One moment, I’ll be craving a good slasher film and the next I’ll be feeling like a feel-good comedy. It was challenging for me to narrow it down to these films but here are five of my all-time favourite movies.

TheDevilWearsPrada

5. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

MoulinRouge

4. Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Cinderella

3. Cinderella (1950)

BatmanReturns

2. Batman Returns (1992)

Bridesmaids

1. Bridesmaids (2011)

Every time The Devil Wears Prada comes on TV, I will stop what I’m doing and sit through it. This witty comedy features solid performances by Anne Hathaway (love her) and Emily Blunt, all while decked out in some killer designer duds. The real draw to this film, however, is Meryl Streep. She’s absolutely flawless in her role as Miranda Priestley and looks stunning. Of course, can we expect anything less from the greatest actress of all time.

I’m a total sucker for musicals – I’m addicted to the sparkly costumes, romantic interludes and elaborate dance routines. Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! has those in spades. It has some fantastic music and it features the finest performance of Nicole Kidman’s career (The Hours be damned).

When it comes to Disney movies, I could make a whole other list of my top five favourites but if I had to choose just one it’d have to be Cinderella. I watched this animated classic over-and-over as a child and would get giddy every time the Fairy Godmother sang “Bibbity Bobbity Boo.” This movie is probably the reason I’m such a hopeless romantic.

Even though Christopher Nolan’s Batman films have become the definitive film versions of the Dark Knight, I still have a soft spot for Tim Burton’s adaptations. Michelle Pfeiffer is flawless as Catwoman and Danny Elfman’s musical score is nothing short of brilliant. It’s also worth noting I can recite each and every one of Michelle Pfeiffer’s lines from this movie. I watch this every Christmas.

Bridesmaids is, hands-down, the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. The script is top-notch and the ensemble cast is incredible. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy kill it in their respective roles. Bridesmaids is so wildly inappropriate that it becomes a challenge not to pee your pants from laughing so hard. Go ahead, I challenge you to watch the bridesmaid dress shopping scene without cracking up.
