As Spring/Summer 2014 fashion week made its way through countless fashion capitals these past few months, we’ve noticed that a few popular trends have popped up among various different designers. We all know that the bright bold hues we’re used to seeing have been pushed aside to make way for the pretty pastels that have taken over the SS runways, not only this year but last. The repetition in colour trends has taken away from the usual “pink is the new black” conversation, and allowed us to focus on the garments themselves.

We saw the rise of the midi skirt (a skirt that sits between knee length and maxi), made popular by Stacey Bendets’ line Alex + Olivia, the oversized tuxedo jacket we saw at the Jason Wu show, and the fitted, feminine dresses showcased at Prabal Gurung, just to name a few.

If you’re someone that follows fashion trends, you may remember the resurrection of the 1990s’ grunge scene during Fall/Winter 2014 shows, where we saw tons of plaid, baggy pants and cropped tops. This trend is still alive and well when talking about street wear, but on the runway it has been fused with feminine pastels to create a risqué tea-with-grandma look. Many celebrities like Khloe Kardashian and Beyonce have adopted this look to show off their toned tummies while getting ready for the warm summer weather.

Need more femininity than the ultra light hues? No need to worry as no colour combination would be complete without a popular pattern. This is where florals come into play. You may be thinking that the combination of pastels and florals is too feminine, but look to Mary Katrantzou ready to wear collection or Preen by Thornton Bregazzi runway shows for inspiration and you won’t be disappointed. Think of this as a modern twist on the 1950’s Stepford wife. Need some celeb inspiration? Check out Miroslava Duma rocking a floral midi or Solange Knowles in an asymmetrical floral suit.

This summer, try flaunting your ultra femme side by mixing these two trends together for a light, fresh look. If you’re too nervous to jump into the floral pool head first, try the trend out with a few accessories first, this is a harmless way to incorporate new trends into your wardrobe.
