Pop music will never go away, it will never just be a one time trend and it’s always been the most accessible genre of music. Even though pop will always be the number one genre in people’s iPods, pop stars do come and go. And with huge acts like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and others, it’s hard to break through and become a mainstream staple in pop music, but there is always the next artist just waiting for their big break.

Nancy Love may just be one of the next big things in the world of pop music.

Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Nancy Love has been wowing her critics with her catchy pop tracks and her electric live performances. The same can be said for the Nanigans, which is the title that the fans have given themselves in the short amount of time Nancy Love has been on the scene.

One cannot deny her popularity when you discover her video for her first single First Lover has over 1,000,000 views on YouTube.

From a very young age Nancy Love was drawn to music. Her passion has always been music and it shows in the work she’s released thus far.

This past week I got the opportunity to talk with Nancy Love about her passion for music and her debut album, This Is Me.

Fresh Print: This Is Me feels pretty inspired by fellow pop stars like Lady Gaga, Madonna and Mariah Carey. Not just in terms of the sound but in the feel to it. It sounds like empowerment is a pretty big theme in your album especially in tracks like Miss Extreme and Your body. Was that intentional?

Nancy Love: Yes, that was definitely intentional! I wanted to make this album stick out in terms of empowerment because I feel that that’s important and I feel that the world needs more of that nowadays and I guess it’s also because I am easily drawn and inspired by public figures and artists such as Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé because they are very powerful and inspirational strong women and I admire the work that they do and how they portray themselves as an artist. I want to come across as not only fun, energetic and versatile but I also want to come across as a powerful, strong artist and a role model to young girls who enjoy my music.

FP: Your songs have a very synth-pop feel to it. I put on Miss Extreme and right away I could feel my body starting to dance a little in my chair. Was that your intent going into recording these tracks, to make a pop-heavy album?

Love: Well for my song Miss Extreme that was definitely the intent. Miss Extreme was a song I wrote about myself and I call it my “introduction song” because it’s about me, my style and who I really am. As for the rest of my album I really wanted to create songs that were not only energetic and fun so that people can dance to them, but I also wanted to create songs that have meaning, that are inspirational yet uplifting and something that people can relate to when listening.

FP: Other tracks like First Lover and Rise and Shine seem very personal. Was there some major personal influence to those tracks?

Love: First Lover and Rise and Shine are very personal to me and I love the way that they turned out! It definitely describes and embraces what I have been through in my life and when I write my songs. I like to sometimes write about situations or experiences that have happened to me or to others. It makes my music relatable and it lets my fans connect with me on a deeper level, which I really love. Yes I can also say that there were major personal influences who definitely inspired me to write these songs, and I am actually grateful for those experiences and influences because they helped me make such beautiful songs that I feel a lot of people will easily relate to.

The Nanigans certainly are relating to the tracks from Nancy Love’s album, which is obvious when you go to any show she is playing, especially in Toronto. Nancy Love has been playing at many clubs in Toronto like the Hard Rock Café and The Velvet Underground, and she’s always performing to over-capacity crowds. As well as singing to around 5,000 Nanigans at Downsview Park, which is a venue that not many bands/artists can command.

I asked her now that she’s an emerging artist on the brink of stardom is she had any advice for other young artists who are also trying to break through.

“The best and wise advice I can give to anyone is to always believe in yourself no matter what and don’t ever give up no matter how hard it gets. Keep following your dreams and every time you fall be sure to pick yourself right up again because before you can fly you must fall sometimes. Believe in your work, in yourself and stay dedicated. Always remember, you cannot make it without the help of your fans!”
