Fashion Diary: Mélissa Nepton Spring 2014The fashion industry in Toronto is buzzing over World MasterCard Fashion Week, held at David Pecaut Square. Collections by some of Canada’s most notable fashion labels including JOE Fresh, Pink Tartan, David Dixon, Beaufille, Mackage, Caitlin Power, and Cara Cheung were shown during the week long event.  Everyone who is anyone in the industry sat front row at the hottest shows in the city. It was easy to run into TV personalities, models, actors and fashion bloggers including Aliyah Jasmine, Jay Strut, the cast of the hit show Degrassi, and former model Stacey McKenzie, as they mingled with the crowd.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Mélissa Nepton Spring 2014 show. It was my first fashion show experience and I was so excited to be a part of it – from checking my name in on the guest list and walking past the security, to being front of house where all the sponsors of fashion week had their respective booths. At around 8:05 pm they began letting attendees in. While I waited, I looked around and saw the who’s who of the fashion industry – from editors of the top Canadian fashion magazines, to publicists from the top fashion PR firms in the city.

The room went black and the spotlights came on – the show was about to start. As the models strutted down the catwalk, I was amazed by the beautiful silhouettes Mélissa’s designs created.  Some of the trends evident in the designs included: polka dot, graphic and floral prints, and a lot of chiffon fabrics. The collection was a sight to see. The black and white colour scheme was accented with hints of mint green, burgundy, navy blue, and grey. It made me want to skip over the quickly approaching winter season and go right into spring. The fabrics were light and the designs were bold enough to perfectly embody the spring season. I completely adored the loose fitting, flowery cardigans. The makeup on the models was minimal – as it should be – to bring the focus away from the models and back to the designs. All-in-all, the show was a success, as the models made their way down the runway for their final walk.
