Getting Involved in Roller Derby1 Equipment: First and foremost, you will need all of the proper equipment which includes skates with proper wheels, bearings and plates. Other necessities include protective gear such as a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads.
Know the game and the rules: It is very important to know how the game works and have knowledge of all the rules before you start out (Check out our previous Roller Derby coverage for a quick overview). Keep in mind which position you would best be suited for-whether that’s a defensive Blocker or the Jammer who scores the points. Going to local roller derby games or watching games over the internet is a great way to learn more about this fantastic sport.
Getting Recruited: Roller Derby Teams recruit during their off season. New recruits are called “Fresh Meat” in roller derby culture. The first draft is basically a skills test. Once you pass it you can become part of one of the beginner teams and move up from there.
Although Roller Derby looks “Cool” and “Badass” (which it is!) it is also a very athletic team sport that demands dedication and commitment to your team. Roller Derby teams usually practice about two to three times a week so it is important for you to be able to fit this into your schedule.
Do you have what it takes? So if you think you have what it takes to be a Roller Derby devil tearing up the fast tracks then you should look into when one of your local teams is recruiting. Roller Derby is an awesome sport. Be prepared to make lots of friends, play an athletic sport and be part of the unique culture that is Roller Derby.
