Next week the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario will launch their exciting SOUND OFF initiative that aims to mobilize young people on the subject of mental illness. Despite its widespread presence, mental illness remains an often hushed and hidden issue in our society. Mental illness can affect an individual’s entire quality of life: their happiness, stability, and even their ability to work or socialize. And, it affects more of us than one might realize. According to the SSO’s website, one in five young Ontarians will be challenged by a mental health issue, likely between the ages of 16 and 24. Given this statistic, it’s no surprise that young community members are rising up to create space for a discussion about mental illness.
The SOUND OFF launch will take place on Wednesday, January 22nd from 1 to 3 PM at University of Toronto’s Hart House. Percussionist and stomp performer Troy Sexton will act as host and moderator of a youth panel discussion that will focus on improvements to the mental health system. The event will also feature performances by local spoken word artists Lishai Peel and Greg Frankson.
Wednesday’s event will mark the beginning of radio and social media campaigns to encourage young people to speak out about their own experiences. This SSO initiative, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, provides an exciting opportunity for young people to make themselves heard and to create tangible changes within their community. SOUND OFF has already heard from over 700 young people about what is and isn’t working to support those suffering from mental illness. These voices will help separate fact from fiction and inform the development of Canada’s mental health system. To get involved, check out SSO’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
