Get Your Paint On!Get your Paint On was an awesome and interesting fundraising event. It was also a great way to spend an evening out especially if you love to paint! Participants got creative while collaboratively painting unique images on a 60 foot canvas set up in the gallery of Brockton Collective. A lot of young people came out to participate in covering the canvas with some brilliant paintings.

The proceeds raised at the event will go towards a new art program called Blank Canvases. Blank Canvases is a new after school art program designed for grade school children. The program will be at the Walnut Studios, 201 Niagara Street, and will have classes where students can learn different art techniques through an appreciation of the history of local Toronto artists. This is an important program and will foster artistic expression in anyone with a creative drive.

Get Your Paint On was a great success and an engaging way to do fundraising. The night started off at 8:30 when groups of youth flocked to the blank canvas with paint brushes and paint – making the canvas take on a life of its own as the blank space slowly disappeared. There was everything from graffiti, to the Cat in the Hat, to unicorn drawings. The concept of the mural was to have everyone who was there participate by painting for the entire night as one large collective. People continued to layer on to the canvas as much as they could until the end of the night.

The participants mingled with each other while they were painting and enjoyed awesome music provided by a DJ. To most people’s amusement the DJ had a Rob Ford picture with the title “BullShit” displayed on his DJ stand. This picture was auctioned off at the end of the night.

As the night wore on, the paintings grew more brilliant, more abstract and more visually appealing as a result of the communal approach taken by the artists. When the crowd cleared out, I had a chance to truly appreciate the work standing in front of me. It amazed me how so many people could express their creativity in their own way, yet have the piece come together flawlessly. It was almost as if several minds had combined their artistic views and talents seamlessly throughout the night and became one body of art that was vivid and full of life.
