Fall Campus Day at York University - Fresh Print

Any Campus Day is an exciting time for grade twelve students that are looking to continue on into post secondary education. It gives them an excellent opportunity to visit and check out the campus, gaining valuable knowledge about what the University has to offer them. When I attend these types of events, the energy and interest I see in these excited senior secondary students always takes me back to that amazing transition phase I went through when choosing what path I wanted to take after high school.Fall Campus Day at York University

York University’s Fall Campus Day gave these young people, interested in attending York University after they graduate from high school, an excellent chance to gain a higher level of insight into the different programs that York University specializes in. These future students accomplished this by talking directly with students who are currently enrolled in programs as well as the faculty of staff that teach the courses. The students and staff who organized this event set up tables in the hallways and some of the classrooms. They provided a wealth of hand-outs that included all kinds of information about the programs. One section I found absolutely amazing was the information area for Engineering programs. There was an opportunity to see a 3D printer on display. I hadn’t ever seen one of these before and I found it fascinating.

The Fall Campus Day at York University also provided visitors an opportunity to attend presentations about the programs as well as attend tours that were lead by current students in these programs. One of the tours I joined was for prospective nursing students. Fall Campus Day at York University - TorontoI was particularly interested in the “fake hospital” where the Nursing students are trained. It seemed like a real hands-on medical environment, complete with dummies in the hospital beds. Teaching staff allowed the attending students and their parents to walk around and check out everything. Another tour I followed was in the Faculty of Fine Arts and emphasized the Dance program. I must admit, their performance facilities were amazing! I also learned they are used by outside theater companies for professional productions. In fact, these dance studios were used during the casting of “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”. I really loved the amazing sculptures and installation art that was on display throughout this facility. I think it creates a great atmosphere for young people that are aspiring to study the fine arts.

York University was originally founded in March 1959, and is now Canada’s third largest university. Their newest addition to the campus is the Life Sciences Building. This modern 160,000-square-foot building was officially opened just over a year ago. It offers programs in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Kinesiology. I was very impressed with the science labs. They still looked brand new and housed state-of-the-art equipment. It was really neat to be able walk through the labs and get a sense of the hands-on part of Life Sciences studies.student with mascot during Fall Campus Day York University

If you are looking to enroll in a Canadian university with quality courses, York University will be an excellent choice. It offers a multitude of different programs, excellent teaching staff and a beautiful campus. In addition to the great bus service to and from the campus, York University will also be serviced by two new subway stops that are expected to be completed by 2016.
