Recently returning from a European tour, Ontario small town natives, The Elwins are returning to the Toronto music scene in a big way.
Forged by the organic influence of yesteryear-pop moguls like the Beach Boys and The Beatles, The Elwins capture the brain staining artistry of a memorable melody, while engaging listeners with trendy sensibility and blissful charm. After the success of the 2012 release of their debut full-length album entitled And I Thank You, The Elwins have gone on to play Canadian stages coast to coast sharing the spotlight with notable Canadian music makers Tokyo Police Club and The Arkells.
Since their rise among the radio waves, The Elwins have undergone a line-up change with the departing of former Bassist, Christopher Shannon, and the addition of the charismatic presence and harmonic vocals of Frankie Figliomeni. Guitarist and vocalist, Matthew Sweeney comments;
“We were leaving for a Canadian Tour on Monday, and auditioned Frankie on Saturday. We were incredibly nervous at the possibility of having to tour as a three-piece, but Frankie came already knowing all the material. We we’re completely blown away and the tour only solidified his place”.
In recently witnessed performances, the on-stage chemistry between Matthew, Freud, Travis and Frankie was undeniable.
Since then, the band has jumped across The Pond to promote the re-release of And I Thank You under German record label, Affairs of The Heart. Unsurprisingly, the album has received substantial radio play and support by an eager German audience, licensing their follow-up visit in May to continue the momentum of support among trendy youth in continental Europe.
Currently, The Elwins have rooted themselves in Toronto to work on their new record, combining creative forces with producer and Brighter Brightest frontman, Derek Hoffman. In this partnership they aim to create a fresh sonic paradox between their original, organic sound and Hoffman’s synthetic, high-fi production style. Commenting on writing influence, Sweeney says;
“More recently, we have been listening to charting Pop music from today to understand the formulas of writing. With artists like Katy Perry, the delivery is so potent we can’t help but study it.”
On the new record, fans can look forward to a song written by newcomer-bassist Frankie Figliomeni. Many of the new songs on the album are emerging from a new collaborative songwriting technique devised to help build band unity and ensure a constantly flowing river of creative juices. Fans can look forward to the ear-tickling release later this year.
“Dream, struggle, victory, that’s the plan.” says Sweeney.
With sturdy work ethic, magnetic live shows and grandiose facial hair, The Elwins are certain to make your summer iTunes playlist.
