This past Saturday was DJ Skate Night at the Harbourfront Centre’s Natrel Rink. It was a lot of fun to come out and skate around to catchy tunes. Some young people even took to the ice to show-off their dance moves. It almost reminded me of an outdoor roller rink from back in the day, with flashing lights and groovy music.
Sergio Almar is the lead programmer for the Skate Night series, which runs from December 14th to March 1st. The Harbourfront hosts a series of 12 of these nights, which are presented as social clubs on ice. Most of the evenings are theme nights where people can come out to skate and have fun. This DJ Skate Night was organized to “save the Arctic” and raise awareness and defend the Arctic from oil spills. It featured DJ Skratch Bastid, who is considered one of the best DJs in Canada. He is also a Juno nominated record producer and has won many DJ competitions all over the world. Conga weekend will celebrate black history month and will have Dr. Jay playing Soca music. They’ll Celebrate Chinese New Year with Lunar Fest and even more amazing music. Most of the events are party themed and often feature several very well-known DJs or crews.
Next week, there will be a holiday party in collaboration with 1 Love T.O., featuring DJ Dlux and DJ Lissa Monet. The main focus of the organization this year is not only to book DJs, but also parties. Footprints is a Toronto DJ party event that has been running for eleven years. Another perfect example is a party called Slowed, which features DJ Lucie Tic, who was voted by the readers of NOW magazine as Toronto’s favorite DJ.
There’s a wide variety of music planned for 2014, which offers everything from old school Funk, Rock and Roll vinyl vintage, and newer electronic EBM music. The evenings are fun for all ages and for anyone who enjoys outdoor winter activities.
